Introduced in 1963, the new 300 Winchester Magnum used the same case length as the rest of the Winchester Magnum family, although the shoulder was moved forward to allow greater powder capacity. This increased capacity made it one of the most potent commercial 30 caliber magnum capable of use in a standard (30-06 length) action.
The 300 Winchester Magnum is primarily a hunting cartridge, but has enjoyed considerable success as a 1,000 yard target round. As a big game cartridge, it is ample for any North American big game species. With its flat trajectory, it is well suited to the long-range shooting conditions frequently encountered in western big game hunting.

Vihtavuori N170 is the slowest burning rifle powder in the N100 series (not taking 20N29 and 24N41 into account) and in fact one of the slowest canister-grade powders readily available from any manufacturer on the market. As with all of our rifle powders, N170 grains are of the cylindrical, single-perforated extruded type. With a length of 1.7 mm and a diameter of 1.1 mm, the grain size is relatively large.
As a very slow burning reloading powder, N170 is a top choice for very large capacity cases such as the .300 Weatherby Mag. and .300 Remington Ultra Mag. and also offers good performance in most of the belted Magnum cartridges. The N170 powder is used by reloaders in shooting disciplines such as long-range big-game hunting and target shooting.

But for those shooters who’re looking to launch 55-62 grain bullets in 5.56mm, or the standard 147/150-grain bullets in 7.62mm, both at standard velocities, we wanted a further optimized solution. Those bullet combinations account for a great proportion of the ammunition consumed in 5.56mm and 7.62mm, so it stands to reason that we should offer a propellant optimized for them! This propellant also works well in 22-250 REM, .222 REM, .303 British, .30-30, and 7.62x54R.
As with our other spherical propellants, AR-Plus flows like water through a volumetric charger. Loaders will see no more than 1/10th of a grain of variation in charge weight from a powder drop. This has been tested in Dillon, RCBS, Lee, Hornady, Hollywood, and Lyman chargers.
