Berry's Preferred Plated bullets begin as a swaged lead core. The swaged lead cores are tumbled in an electrically charged bath containing high-grade copper ingots. The copper clings to the lead and the longer the bullets remain in the bath, the thicker the plating. The bullets are plated to the correct size and then taken out of the bath. Plated bullets are not as expensive as jacketed bullets. They are cleaner than lead but you'll want to stay away from magnum velocities when loading plated bullets. Conventional polymer tips in high BC bullets melt in flight. Hornady engineers discovered that conventional bullet tip materials in streamlined, high BC bullets melt and deform. Although not a significant issue affecting moderate BC conventional tipped varmint and hunting bullets, aerodynamic heating causes BC reduction and degradation of accuracy, particularly at extended ranges (400 yds +). To counter this effect, Hornady identified a heat resistant polymer and developed the patent pending Heat Shield tip. This revolutionary new tip creates the perfect meplat (tip) with exceptionally consistent results from bullet-to-bullet and lot-to-lot. The Heat Shield tip defies the effects of aerodynamic heating and retains its shape to provide a perfect meplat (tip) that is always the same shape. In 1995, Sierra worked with military ordnance experts to produce a superior long-range bullet for the M21, M24 and M40A1 sniper systems. The result was the new 175 grain #2275 MatchKing® bullet. This bullet has also generated considerable interest among competitive Service Rifle match shooters. A higher ballistic coefficient compared to the 168 grain bullet (#2200) allows it to remain supersonic at 1000 yards when fired from 308/7.62mm caliber Service Rifles.
Sierra MatchKing® bullets have set the standards worldwide for consistent accuracy in handguns as well as rifles. Since the introduction of the high performance Remington XP-100 and similar handguns chambering larger rifle cartridges, all 30 caliber MatchKings® have been used in handgun silhouettes and long-range target competitions.
