Winchester introduced the cartridge to the sporting public as the 308 Winchester. Initially, the 308 was chambered in the bolt action Model 70 rifle. Since then, the cartridge has been chambered by virtually every major arms maker in almost every conceivable action type. Public acceptance was slow, due largely to unflattering comparisons to the 30-06. Despite the initial lukewarm enthusiasm, the 308 has become one of the most useful sporting cartridges. The 308 is an extremely accurate cartridge. In fact, it probably is the most inherently accurate 30 caliber commercial cartridge ever produced. Few, if any, other cartridges have been so successful in such a wide range of shooting disciplines. It has also become quite popular as a hunting cartridge and is adequate for most North American big game species, particularly deer-sized game. Sierra® offers this venerable round with it’s 165-grain GameChangerTM bullet as an excellent choice for an all-around performer in the field.

Soft point .303 British ammunition is available for the .303 Brit and is the ammunition of choice for most hunting uses with this chambering. Soft point bullets do not have their lead cores completely enclosed by a metal jacket; rather, the gilding metal jacket ends toward the bullet's tip exposing the lead core. This bullet design enables significant expansion of the bullet's diameter when encountering the target. Soft point, or “SP” bullets produce much greater damage to the target than fully jacketed bullets, an important advantage for hunters desiring a large wound channel for quick put-downs and clean kills.
