The 6.5mm/.264 inch bore has recently enjoyed a resurgence of interest. Several rifle manufacturers currently produce 6.5x55mm sporters, exposing a new generation of shooters to this famous old Scandinavian service and hunting cartridge. Competitive HighPower and Silhouette shooters have also shown great interest in the 6.5mm bore size. The 140 grain #1740 bullet is a superb competitor for ranges out to 1000 yards, in medium- and high-capacity 6.5mm cartridges. While they are recognized around the world for record-setting accuracy, MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are not recommended for most hunting applications. Although MatchKing® and Tipped MatchKing® bullets are commonly used for varmint hunting, their design will not provide the same reliable explosive expansion at equivalent velocities in varmints compared to their lightly jacketed Hornet, Blitz or Varminter counterparts.

Conventional polymer tips in high BC bullets melt in flight. Hornady engineers discovered that conventional bullet tip materials in streamlined, high BC bullets melt and deform. Although not a significant issue affecting moderate BC conventional tipped varmint and hunting bullets, aerodynamic heating causes BC reduction and degradation of accuracy, particularly at extended ranges (400 yds +). The polymer tip of the V-Max bullet is the key to its dramatic accuracy and devastating expansion, even in long range, low-velocity situations. The tip raises the ballistic coefficient for improved velocity and flight stability, and on impact initiates bullet expansion. Sierra MatchKing bullets have very thin jackets and are held to exacting tolerances in diameter and weight. These Hollow Point Boat Tail bullets have a small meplat to produce a higher ballistic coefficient. Their accuracy has been acclaimed worldwide and they have been used to win more target competitions than all target bullets from other manufacturers combined. This bullet is the best long-range hunting bullet in 6.5 mm caliber. Exceptional accuracy, excellent ballistic shape, and adequate weight for medium and heavy game make this a truly exceptional bullet. This bullet is at its best in country like the wide open western prairie where shots are long and conditions difficult. It has a flat trajectory, great ability to resist crosswinds and vertical winds, and high energy delivery downrange. The bullet performs very well from any 6.5 mm cartridge with medium to large powder capacity, but it is at its absolute best from magnum rifles with maximum hunting loads.

The new 140gr Tipped GameKing is designed for hunting from today’s newer cartridges using a 1-8” twist. Expansion is enhanced by the tip and penetration is regulated by the thick jacket, giving spectacular results on a wide variety of game animals. Game from the size of whitetail to possibly elk and a multiple of bears in-between could be easily taken.
This bullet requires a barrel twist rate of 1×8” or faster.
